Production Roles

D.O.P -  Director of photography

The D.O.P is the Director of Photography; The Director of Photography has the role of managing and supervising the filming of the production, they are also responsible for the “look and feel” of the film.

Producer
The role of the Producer in a film is to produce ideas; they are in-charge of the whole production process and finances, they might also have the role of hiring key roles, including selection of the cask for the production.   

Editor

The Editors responsibility is to organise the footage when the filming of the production had commenced. The editor is also responsible for editing and cutting the film for release, they also have the role of choosing what shots will be used in the particular scene.

Composer

Composers are responsible for writing music and collecting music for the film, they are also in-charge of sound effects and dialogue. They need to ensure that the piece fits in with what the producers set out.

Caterer  

The caterer works with the whole film production crew to provide food, drinks and beverages and snacks. The caterers need to consider special dietary requirements as well as what’s going to be cooked for the day.

Jaws Questions..


JAWS...
Where did the idea for Jaws originate? How did it become a film? Who contributed to the screenplay?
The idea of the movie “JAWS” originated from the novel “JAWS” by Robert Benchley

Why were particular scenes removed from the film?
Particular scenes were removed in the movie as they were to violent

During the pre-production stage what sort of footage did the producers commission in preparation for the film? How was the script changed as a result of this footage?
The produces commission wanted footage of real sharks in the pre-production stage of the filming, the script was changed because of the trip to Australia to get footage of actual sharks – They got footage that made the shark look like it attacking the cage but the shark was actual trying to get out, there was nobody in the cage at the time.  


What was involved during the casting process?
 Steinberg didn’t want any big names for the film; he wanted actors and actresses that would be suited for the role.  Chief Brody   Played by Roy Scheider, Matt Hooper    Played by  Richard Dreyfuss, Sam Quint    Played by Robert Shaw, Ellen Brody    Played by Lorraine Gary.


What is location scouting? Why did Steven Spielberg choose the locations for the film?
Location Scouting is a vital process in the pre-production stage of film making. Once scriptwriters and producers have a general idea of the scenery that they require, they look for suitable places and location for the scene to be shot.  The location was chosen because it was close to land but had a wide ocean view.


Describe how actors contributed to the production of Jaws?
The actors in the movie Jaws contributed by introducing their own lines, they were also a part of the making on the production of the film.      
                                                  
What does a composer do? What considerations were taken into account when writing the music for Jaws?
The composer is someone that writes music the film, when and how will the music be used in the film and how will it work with the scene? These things need to be considered in the writing process.

What did Spielberg do as a result of test screenings?
Steinberg and his team were very happy with how the test screening went. Steinberg wanted to make some of the scenes scarier.
What does an editor do? Who was the editor on Jaws and what was her responsibility?
The editor of the film Jaws was Burn Fields. The editor job of the film was to cut and edit the film.


Based on the documentary, what are the responsibilities of a producer?
The responsibilities of the producer on the film Jaws was to produce the film.


What does the producer do once principal photography has finished?
The produces arranges film distribution of the film once the production has completed.
What did the production designer do on the film?
The production designer’s role was to design the set or location to attract the audience.  

What role do you think you have the skills to fulfil?
I think I would like to have the skills to fulfil the job of an camera operator or editor
